An example

One connection. Two ways to work.

  1. Your assistant

The one you already use, in a chat app or on your computer.

  2. River MCP

The connection. MCP is the open standard assistants use to work with other apps.

  3. Your River

Your documents, sheets, decks, files, email, and calendar, plus River’s AI.

  • Quick changes, right away.

Your assistant adds a row, renames a file, or schedules a meeting with River’s own tools.

  • Big jobs, handed off.

Decks, research, and analysis go to River’s AI, which keeps working while your assistant checks in.

What you can ask. And what happens next.

  • Turn my notes into a board deck.

River’s AI builds the deck in River from your notes and numbers.

  • Find 20 founders we could interview.

River’s AI searches the web and LinkedIn, then lists them in a sheet with why each fits.

  • What changed in our pipeline this week?

Your assistant reads and searches your sheets, documents, and synced email.

  • Put these contracts in River.

Files from your computer land in River, ready to read, search, and share.

  • Update this week’s deals in HubSpot.

River does it in its own browser, with your sign-ins, while River runs on your computer.

  • Export the update as a PDF.

Any document, sheet, or deck comes back as PDF, Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.

Your assistant sets it up. You just answer.

  1. 1Install River.

Your assistant sends the right download.

  2. 2Share your email.

The one you signed up with.

  3. 3Read back the code.

    Six digits from River’s email.

Set up River for me. River is my AI workspace: its AI works in River's own browser and apps, and you can hand it work through River's MCP server.

1. Add River's MCP server, named "river". It runs on this computer: npx -y @meetriver/mcp
Claude Code: claude mcp add river -- npx -y @meetriver/mcp
Can't run it here (Claude.ai, ChatGPT)? Add https://api.meetriver.com/mcp as a custom connector instead, and I'll sign in on River's page.
If River's tools don't show up, ask me to restart you and paste this again.
2. Call River's sign_in tool with no arguments and follow it. It checks that River is installed, then has you ask me for my email and the code River emails me.
3. Call get_workspace and follow River's setup guide.

In Claude or ChatGPT, you add River’s address and sign in on River’s page. Prefer to add River yourself? Steps for each assistant

You stay in charge. The decisions that matter are yours.

  • You sign in.

No assistant connects without a code River emails you.

  • You pay and connect.

Payments and connections come as links you approve.

  • Only what you ask.

River sends only what you ask for, and checks when unsure.

  • Access you control.

Every sign-in email has a link to remove your assistant.

A few things to know.

What is River?

River is the AI workspace, where you and AI work together across your documents, apps, and files. It’s an app for Mac, Windows, and Linux.

Which assistants work with River?

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, Gemini CLI, and any assistant that supports MCP. Claude and ChatGPT connect through River’s address.

Do I need a River account?

Yes, one you make in River’s app. Your assistant sends the download if you need it, then signs in with a code River emails you.

Does River need to be open?

No. Once installed, River keeps running in the background, so your assistant can hand it work any time, even on sites you use in River’s browser.

Is my work private?

Yes. Your work is encrypted in transit and at rest, and River never uses it to train AI. Your assistant sees what it reads in River, so its own app’s privacy terms cover that.

What does it cost?

The same as River. Work your assistant hands off uses your plan’s AI allowance, and it can send you a link to upgrade.
