How to write and post a fanfiction one-shot

Start from a canon point, the moment your story leaves canon, such as just after Darcy's first proposal in Pride and Prejudice. Your readers already know the source, so skip the recap and spend your words on what canon never showed. Pick one trope and build to its key scene: the single bed, or the fake date that stops feeling fake. If any other character could say a line of dialogue, rewrite it. Then end the story, because a one-shot is complete in one chapter.

On Archive of Our Own (AO3), the posting tutorial1 marks the title, rating, archive warnings and at least one fandom as required. Choose a rating rather than the default, Not Rated, which AO3 may treat like Mature or Explicit work in searches. Pick No Archive Warnings Apply only if there's no major character death, graphic violence, rape/non-con or underage sexual activity. Tag tropes and alternate universes as your fandom does, since readers find fic through tags. Draft elsewhere first: AO3 has no autosave and deletes unposted drafts a month after you create them.

AO3's 2023 statement on AI2 says nothing in its Terms of Service prohibits fic made with AI, though posting many works in a short time could count as spam. Tag the story Created Using Generative AI3 so readers who'd rather skip AI fic can filter it out. Check event rules: the Yuletide 20264 fic exchange bans ChatGPT and similar generative tools. In the US, the Organization for Transformative Works, which runs AO3, says fair use favors5 work that is non-commercial, transformative and limited. So keep fic free and in your own words.

How it works

What does a good fanfiction generator give you?

A good fanfiction generator gives you a finished story about characters you already love, not an opening that trails off. Give River your fandom and ship, and a trope if you like. It writes the whole one-shot, 2,500 to 4,000 words that build to the trope's key scene and end without a cliffhanger. Above the story sits a work header laid out the way AO3 displays one, from rating and archive warnings down to the summary and notes.

Fic lives or dies on characters sounding like themselves. River keeps each one's habits of speech and the choices they would actually make, and uses canon details without recapping them. Add a canon point, an AU, plot beats or a point of view such as reader-insert, and River works in every detail, taking your beats in order. If it doesn't know your canon well, it stays close to your notes and lists in chat the details to check before you post.

The rating defaults to Teen And Up Audiences unless you ask for another, and the archive warnings match what the story contains. River doesn't copy the source's text, dialogue or lyrics beyond a brief nod. The story is laid out like a well-kept posted fic, with centered breaks between scenes and any letter or text message set as a block quote. For a trope-first story with characters of your own, try the romance story generator, and plan a long fic in the story bible template.

How it works

From ship to finished one-shot

  1. Name the ship

Type your fandom and ship, add a canon point or plot notes, and tap a trope if you like.

  2. River writes it

It writes the whole story straight into your doc without asking questions first, keeping every character in voice.

  3. Check the header

Read the story, then look over the rating, warnings and tags above it and edit anything that doesn't fit.

  4. Post or continue

Copy the fic to AO3 when you're happy with it, or ask River for chapter two in the same voice.

Example

Teen And Up Audiences · F/M · Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy

The Letter in His Coat

The landlord was very sorry. He said so three times, and each time Elizabeth liked him less.

"One room," Mr. Darcy repeated, as though the words were a discourtesy aimed at him in particular.

"You may have it," said Elizabeth. "I have survived worse company than a chair."

Questions authors ask

Common questions

What is a fanfiction generator?

A fanfiction generator is an AI tool that writes new stories about characters from the books, shows, games or films you already love. The useful ones take your fandom, ship and trope, keep the characters in voice and finish the story. River's version writes a complete one-shot under an AO3-style header with rating, warnings, tags and summary.

How do I write a fanfic with River?

Type your fandom and ship in the box at the top of this page, with a canon point or plot notes if you have them. Tap a trope, or leave the choice to River. It writes the whole one-shot into your free River workspace, where you can edit any tag, ask for changes or copy the story to AO3.

Can I post AI-written fanfiction on AO3?

Yes. In a 2023 statement, AO3 said nothing in its Terms of Service prohibits fanworks made fully or partly with AI tools. River suggests the Created Using Generative AI tag in your header, so readers can choose whether to read AI-assisted fic. Some gift exchanges, such as Yuletide, ban AI tools, so read the rules before you sign up.

What do / and & mean in a ship?

On AO3, a slash marks a romantic or sexual relationship, as in Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy. An ampersand marks a platonic one between friends, family or teammates, as in Sherlock Holmes & John Watson. Write your ship the same way and River matches the story and the AO3 category to it: F/M for that romance, Gen for a friendship.

Can the fanfiction generator write about real people?

Yes, about public figures in their public roles, such as Formula 1 drivers or a band on tour. River tags the fandom the AO3 way, as in Formula 1 RPF, keeps any romance to kisses and never writes sexual content about a real person. Ask about a private person, like a classmate or an ex, and it writes original characters with the same dynamic instead.

Can River turn my one-shot into a longer fic?

Yes. When the one-shot ends, River offers two next steps. One writes a second chapter in the same voice, picking up where the story stopped. The other retells the story from the other character's side in a new doc. To continue a fic you started yourself, paste your last scene into Continue My Story.

Is the fanfiction generator free?

Yes, it is free to start, and you don't need a card. Your one-shot opens in a River workspace, where you can edit it, share it or ask River to change it. Paid plans add more AI use and access to the most advanced models.
