How to write Northwestern's supplemental essays yourself
The required background essay looks forward: Northwestern's writing FAQ1 says its questions focus on how your experiences have shaped the ways you see yourself engaging at Northwestern. Pick two or three parts of your background, such as your identity, school setting, community or household. Show each through a detail only you could give ("38 seniors," not "a small school"), then tie it to something you'd do on campus. End there, not in the past.
Choose one or two optional questions that show something new, and skip the diversity question if it would repeat your background essay. Students guard The Rock for 24 hours2 to earn the right to paint it, so pick an image worth that wait and say why. Build a dream class around a real problem, with collaborators named by field or skill. For communities or location, name a real group or place, such as one of Northwestern's more than 500 clubs and activities3, and what you'd do there.
Keep to the limits: 300 words or fewer for the background essay, and fewer than 200, so 199 at most, for each optional answer. Northwestern invites you to reuse your own writing from other applications, including sections of your personal essay. Do that reworking yourself, though: its guidance on AI and admission4 lists having AI rework another school's essay as a problematic use, while brainstorming and grammar checks are fine. Northwestern's 2026–27 questions
Northwestern's required and optional questions
The first question is required for Common App and Coalition with Scoir applicants. Northwestern encourages you to answer at least one and no more than two of the other five. The wording is copied from Northwestern's application materials page3.
| Question | Exact wording | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Required · Your background | We want to be sure we’re considering your application in the context of your personal experiences: What aspects of your background (your identity, your school setting, your community, your household, etc.) have most shaped how you see yourself engaging in Northwestern’s community, be it academically, extracurricularly, culturally, politically, socially, or otherwise? | 300 words or fewer |
| Optional · The Rock | Painting “The Rock” is a tradition at Northwestern that invites all forms of expression—students promote campus events or extracurricular groups, support social or activist causes, show their Wildcat spirit (what we call “Purple Pride”), celebrate their culture, and more. What would you paint on The Rock, and why? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Dream class or project | Northwestern fosters a distinctively interdisciplinary culture. We believe discovery and innovation thrive at the intersection of diverse ideas, perspectives, and academic interests. Within this setting, if you could dream up an undergraduate class, research project, or creative effort (a start-up, a design prototype, a performance, etc.), what would it be? Who might be some ideal classmates or collaborators? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Communities on campus | Community and belonging matter at Northwestern. Tell us about one or more communities, networks, or student groups you see yourself connecting with on campus. | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Location | Northwestern’s location is special: on the shore of Lake Michigan, steps from downtown Evanston, just a few miles from Chicago. What aspects of our location are most compelling to you, and why? | Fewer than 200 words |
| Optional · Diversity of perspectives | Northwestern is a place where people with diverse backgrounds from all over the world can study, live, and talk with one another. This range of experiences and viewpoints immeasurably enriches learning. How might your individual background contribute to this diversity of perspectives in Northwestern’s classrooms and around our campus? | Fewer than 200 words |
QuestBridge applicants may treat every short answer as optional. The Common App personal essay is optional for Northwestern this cycle. Checked October 29, 2026.

Northwestern essays from admitted students
Five of these six essays answered Northwestern's former "Why Northwestern" question, and one answered a question about an activity. Neither question is in the 2026–27 supplement, but the essays still help with the communities and dream-class questions, which reward the same specific detail.

How it works
What are Northwestern's supplemental essays for 2026–27?
Northwestern's 2026–27 supplement has one required essay, 300 words or fewer, on the parts of your background that most shaped how you see yourself engaging on campus. Five optional questions follow, each answered in fewer than 200 words, and Northwestern encourages you to answer one or two. It no longer requires the Common App personal essay. Applications are due November 1, 2026 for Early Decision and January 4, 2027 for Regular Decision.
River's Northwestern supplement writer starts from whatever you give it: notes on your school, town or family, your activities, a résumé or your Common App essay. It finds the two or three parts of your background with the most to say and ties each to something you'd do at Northwestern. Unless you choose them, it picks the optional questions your material answers best and gives each a different story. A Northwestern group or program appears only if you mentioned it or River confirmed it on Northwestern's own website.
Each answer arrives with its exact word count, and a bracket marks any detail only you know, because River never invents an activity, quote or hardship. Treat the result as a first draft built from your own facts. Northwestern expects your essays to be your own work, so rewrite each answer in your voice before you submit. The college essay grader scores any draft, and the supplemental essay writer drafts supplements for the other colleges on your list.

Before and after
Your notes in. Northwestern's answers out.
Western Kansas, 38 seniors in my class. I started our school newspaper (me plus two freshmen), I'm yearbook co-editor and the backup shortstop. Summers I weigh trucks at the grain elevator, the tallest building in town. A lot of families here don't have reliable internet. I wrote a story about kids doing homework at night in the library parking lot on the library's Wi-Fi, and 600 people read it online. Want Medill for journalism. Rock idea: our grain elevator, painted purple, with our town's name under it so the next kid from here knows someone made it. Dream class: journalism and engineering students mapping dead zones.
Background essay (opening) At a high school with 38 seniors, nobody gets to be just one thing. I'm the newspaper, half of the yearbook and the backup shortstop. When I saw kids doing homework after dark in the library parking lot, running on the library's Wi-Fi, there was no editor to pitch, so I wrote the story myself. Six hundred people read it, including [someone whose reaction surprised you]. What would you paint on The Rock? (53 words) I'd paint a grain elevator, purple from the foundation up. Back home in western Kansas, the elevator is the tallest building in town, and I've spent my summers there weighing trucks. Underneath, I'd paint the name of my town, so the next kid from a class of 38 knows someone made it here.
Every fact is from the notes. The bracket asks for a detail the student never mentioned.

Questions applicants ask
Common questions
Does Northwestern require the Common App essay for 2026–27?
No. Northwestern made the personal essay optional because its supplement now has a required question, according to its writing supplements FAQ1. It invites you to reuse your own writing in that answer, including sections of your personal essay. If you send a personal essay anyway, Northwestern says it can still review it.
How many Northwestern optional questions should I answer?
Zero, one or two, and Northwestern encourages at least one. Its writing FAQ says answering more carries no extra weight: students who answer zero, one or two optional questions get equal consideration. So answer a second only if it shows a side of you the first doesn't, and keep each under 200 words, which means 199 at most.
What should I paint on The Rock for Northwestern?
Something you care about, described so clearly a reader can picture it. Northwestern's prompt names campus events, student groups, causes, Wildcat spirit and culture as fair game. Describe the painting in a sentence or two, then spend the rest on why it matters to you. A specific image, such as a family recipe or a landmark from home, beats a slogan.
Can I use AI on my Northwestern essays?
Yes, for brainstorming and grammar checks, but not for the writing itself. Northwestern's guidance on AI and admission4 calls brainstorming essay topics and reviewing grammar, punctuation and spelling constructive uses. Submitting AI's output as your own writing is on its list of problematic uses. Its bottom line: just as you wouldn't ask another person to write your essays, Northwestern expects you won't ask AI to.
When are Northwestern's 2026–27 deadlines?
Early Decision applications are due November 1, 2026, and Regular Decision applications January 4, 2027, both by 11:59 pm your local time, per Northwestern's deadlines page5. Early Decision results come in mid-December and Regular Decision results in late March. Financial aid forms are due December 1 for Early Decision and February 1 for Regular Decision.
