How to turn a random plot into a story worth writing

A random plot generator hands you a premise in seconds, but a premise is only a situation. In Aspects of the Novel (1927), E.M. Forster showed that cause is what turns a story into a plot. "The king died and then the queen died" is a story; "The king died, and then the queen died of grief" is a plot1. Test each idea for four links: someone who wants something, a force in their way, a turn that forces a new plan, and an ending that settles it.

Then choose. Generate several, sleep on them, and keep the plot you're still turning over the next morning, as long as you can say its ending in a sentence. In 1846, Edgar Allan Poe wrote that "every plot, worth the name, must be elaborated to its dénouement before any thing be attempted with the pen."2 Only with the ending in view, he argued, does each incident feel like a consequence. Let a coincidence start the trouble but not end it, and don't make anyone act foolishly to keep it going.

Size the plot before you start: one turn and a small cast fit a short story, several reversals a novel. The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association's Nebula Awards put numbers on those lengths. By their rules, a short story runs under 7,500 words, a novelette under 17,500, a novella under 40,000 and a novel 40,000 or more3. Keep the ending your genre promises, such as a hopeful one in romance. Then swap generic details for ones you know, like a job you've done or a street you can walk in your head.

How it works

What should a plot generator give you?

A plot generator should give you plots you could start writing today, not parts to assemble. Some generators hand you two characters, a setting, a situation and a theme, and leave the connecting to you. Tap a genre here and River writes five complete plots into a doc in your free workspace. Each has a title, trope tags and a hook under 30 words, then who wants what, what's in the way, the turn, the ending and its best length.

The five are built to differ in hero, setting, trope and kind of ending. Each keeps its genre's promise: romance ends hopeful, a mystery names who did it and why, horror may end dark, and adding "cozy" keeps violence off the page. Outside romance and cozy, at least one of the five ends bittersweet or open. River also skips stock moves such as chosen-one prophecies, amnesia openings and dream reveals, unless you ask for them.

Add a place, an era or notes on your own characters to steer the batch. Your characters appear in all five plots as five different takes, with every name and fact kept. If a detail pulls against the genre, the detail wins and the tag line names the blend. When a plot grabs you, the book outline generator can stretch it into chapters and the character generator can give your hero a backstory. If you already have a premise, the AI story generator starts from it.

Questions authors ask

Common questions

What is a plot generator?

A plot generator, sometimes called a story idea generator, suggests plots for your next story. Some shuffle random pieces for you to connect, while others draft whole plots. River's version gives you five complete plots for the genre you tap. Each has a hook, a turning point and a stated ending, so you can judge which one you'd want to write.

How do I generate a plot with River?

Tap a genre in the box at the top of this page, add anything you want included, and press "Give me five plots." Once you've made your free account, River writes five complete plots into a doc in your River workspace. Read them, edit any line, ask for five more, or tap "Write one as a story" to turn your favorite into a complete short story.

Are the plots random?

Not in the dice-roll sense. River invents them fresh each time instead of pulling from a list or filling blanks in a template, so the same genre gives you new plots on every try. Tap Surprise me for five plots across five genres. To steer them, type anything you want included, from a setting to your own cast of characters.

What if none of the five grab me?

Ask for five more, or say what you liked, such as "more like plot 2 but darker," and River builds the next batch around it. You can also try another genre, or add a detail that matters to you so the plots start closer to home. Have a story that needs a jolt instead? The plot twist generator works from a setup you paste.

Can River write the plot as a story?

Yes. Tap "Write one as a story" and tell River which number you like. It writes that plot as a complete short story in a new doc and leaves your five plots as they were. Ask it to "outline plot 3 as a novel" and the outline gets its own doc too. To shape the story yourself first, the Save the Cat beat sheet lays out 15 beats.

Can I publish a book based on one of these plots?

Yes. In the US, copyright doesn't protect ideas4, only the way they're expressed, so a plot idea is free to build on and the words you write are yours. Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing treats AI used only for brainstorming as AI-assisted, which needs no disclosure5. If River writes the story text, Amazon counts it as AI-generated, even after heavy edits, and you must tell Amazon when you publish.

Is the plot generator free?

Yes, it is free to start, and you don't need a card. Your five plots open in a River workspace, where you can edit them, share them or ask River to change them. Paid plans add more AI use and access to the most advanced models.
