How to write the UVA Nursing supplement and your Common App essay

The Nursing question asks for "a health care-related experience or another significant interaction," so you don't need a hospital job: one talk with your grandmother's nurse can carry it. Its key word is "deepened": your interest is a given, so show the moment it grew. Give about 100 words to the scene, 100 to what it showed you about the daily work, and the last 50 to the nurse you want to become. Tell a different story from your Common App essay.

Applying anywhere else at UVA? Then the Common App essay is the only essay UVA reads from you. Write it for the Common App prompts, not for UVA, and pick a story the rest of your application doesn't tell. A September 2026 post on UVA's admission blog1 says a strong essay "gives readers insight into your experiences, perspective, and interests." Tell one moment well rather than summarizing your life, in 250 to 650 words.

With no short answers, your activities list carries more of your story. UVA's advice on the activities section2 says filling all ten spaces "isn't the norm" and descriptions should detail your own involvement, not explain the club. Skip the résumé or research paper, which UVA doesn't accept. Then write every final word yourself: UVA's deadlines page3 asks you not to "cut and paste any part" of your essay from an AI tool. You also sign an honor statement that your materials are your original work, "not primarily a product of AI."

UVA's 2026–27 writing

UVA's only supplemental essay question for 2026–27

In August 2025, UVA's admission blog4 announced that only School of Nursing applicants would answer a UVA question. College Essay Guy's 2026/2027 guide5, updated August 3, 2026, reports the same setup this year, with a 250-word limit. UVA's blog hasn't posted this year's wording, so check the question in your Common App.

How it works

Does UVA have supplemental essays for 2026–27?

For 2026–27, UVA's only supplemental essay is one School of Nursing question, answered in 250 words or fewer. Everyone else sends just the Common App essay. River's UVA essay writer drafts whichever piece you need: tell it which UVA school you're applying to, then paste your notes, activities or a draft, or drop files. Nursing applicants get the short answer, built on one real moment, or both pieces. For any other UVA school, you get a Common App essay of 250 to 650 words, written from your own stories.

River reads everything first, plus anything already in your workspace, such as an activities list from the activities list writer. If you paste a Common App draft, it keeps your best lines and says what it changed. It uses only the facts, names and feelings you give it, and leaves a bracket like [what the nurse told you] where a detail is missing. Each piece arrives with its exact word count, then a short list of brackets to fill and your deadlines.

Because UVA asks applicants not to paste AI-written text, use River's draft to find your story and its shape, then write the version you submit yourself. When your version is done, ask River to grade it on story, specificity, reflection and voice, with the line behind each score. The college essay grader adds a note on every paragraph. Applying to colleges that ask for more writing, like UT Austin? The supplemental essay writer plans every school's prompts together.

How it works

From your notes to your UVA essay

  1. Share your notes

Paste notes, activities or a draft, or drop up to 10 files, and name your UVA school.

  2. River picks the moment

It reads everything, then builds each piece on one moment, with a different story for each if you need both.

  3. Read your draft

It arrives with its exact word count and a bracket wherever a detail only you know is missing.

  4. Make it yours

Fill the brackets and rewrite it in your own words, since UVA asks you not to paste AI text.

Example

  2. School of Nursing · closing lineI want to be the nurse who explains the board to the family before anyone has to ask.
  3. Before you submitFill one bracket: the question you asked a nurse that changed how you saw his care.

What you'll get

UVA's one Nursing question, or the Common App essay UVA reads

  • The School of Nursing answer in 250 words or fewer, built on one health care moment of yours
  • Or your Common App essay of 250 to 650 words, the one essay most UVA applicants send
  • Exact word counts, and brackets wherever only you know the detail

Before and after

Your notes in. Your UVA Nursing answer out.

What you paste (example)

Applying to the School of Nursing. Grandpa had a stroke last year and spent 3 weeks in rehab. His whiteboard said FALL RISK in red. I learned to read the whole board by asking his nurses about every line. Took a CNA class this summer. Work weekends at an assisted living home in Richmond. I want to be the nurse who explains things to families.

Your Nursing answer (opening)

My grandfather's whiteboard said FALL RISK in red. By the end of his three weeks in rehab, I could read every line on it, because I had asked his nurses about each one. [The question that changed how you saw his care] was the one that stuck. This summer I took a CNA class. On weekends I work at an assisted living home in Richmond.

Every fact comes from the notes. The bracket marks the one moment only the student remembers.

What lands in your doc

What's in your UVA essay

  • A Common App essay that never names UVA, so it works for every college on your list
  • Different stories for the Nursing answer and the essay when you're writing both

Questions applicants ask

Common questions

How many essays does UVA require for 2026–27?

One for most applicants: the Common App personal essay, at 250 to 650 words. School of Nursing applicants also answer UVA's 250-word Nursing question. Applicants to the College of Arts & Sciences, Engineering, Architecture and Kinesiology write no UVA supplemental essay. UVA's admission blog announced the end of its other short answers4 in 2025–26, and College Essay Guy reports they haven't returned for 2026–27.

What is the UVA Nursing supplemental essay prompt?

The UVA Nursing prompt reads: "Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing." College Essay Guy's 2026/2027 guide5 gives that wording and a 250-word limit. UVA's own 2025–26 post said "other" instead of "another," so go by the wording in your application. Only School of Nursing applicants see it, in UVA's section of the Common App.

Should I mention UVA in my Common App essay?

No. A September 2026 post on UVA's admission blog1 says there's no need to rewrite a good essay just to mention UVA or one of its programs. It adds that UVA has never had a "why UVA" essay in the author's 20 years there. Authentic voice, the post says, matters far more than working a college's name into the essay. Your essay goes to every college on your list.

Can I use AI on my UVA essays?

Only for small jobs. UVA's deadlines page3 says AI may help you brainstorm topics or check grammar, but you shouldn't paste any part of your essay from an AI tool. Essays that rely more on AI than your own thoughts, UVA says, "lack your voice, your ideas, and your very personal reflection on how your experiences have shaped you." Treat any AI draft, River's included, as notes you rewrite from.

When are UVA's 2026–27 deadlines?

Early Decision and Early Action applications are due November 1, and Regular Decision January 5, per UVA's deadlines page3. Teachers and counselors have until November 8 or January 10. Decisions come by December 15 for Early Decision, February 15 for Early Action and April 1 for Regular Decision. Early Decision is binding. Testing stays optional for fall 2027, and UVA says neither choice puts you at a disadvantage.

How do I write my UVA essay with River?

Paste your notes, activities or a draft into the box at the top of this page, or drop up to 10 files, and name your UVA school. River drafts the Nursing answer, your Common App essay or both, inside UVA's limits and with brackets for missing details. The draft opens in your free River workspace, ready for you to rewrite in your own words.

Is the UVA essay writer free?

Yes, it is free to start, with no card needed. Your UVA draft opens in a River workspace, where you can edit it, share it or ask River to change it. Paid plans add more AI use and access to the most advanced models.
