For consultants comparing ChatGPT
ChatGPT Alternative for Consultants' Work
A client brief from your files or a pasted ChatGPT chat: what each file says, where every figure comes from, and what to ask next.
Free to start. No card needed.
How to use ChatGPT on client work
Before you upload anything, check your client agreement's confidentiality terms, and use a code name for the client where you can. OpenAI says it may train on content from Free, Plus and Pro plans1 unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone." Even after you opt out, a thumbs up or down on a reply means the whole conversation may be used for training. Business and Enterprise workspaces are excluded by default, even when you rate a reply, which makes them the better home for client files.
Then give each client its own project, with the files and your instructions in one place. OpenAI's Projects help page2 explains that, except on Enterprise and Edu, a project with default memory can draw on your other chats and projects. Choose project-only memory to wall each client off, though ChatGPT Work isn't available in such a project. In the instructions, tell ChatGPT to cite the file and page for every figure and to say "not in the files" rather than guess.
Treat what comes back as a draft, and check every figure against its page before it reaches the client. In a 2023 Harvard Business School study3 of 758 BCG consultants, those using GPT-4 finished 12% more work, 25% faster, with 40% higher quality on tasks suited to AI. But on a harder problem built from spreadsheets and interviews, they were 19 percentage points less likely to get it right. Where two files disagree, ask the client rather than let the model choose.
How it works
How River writes your client brief
A client brief is the short, sourced summary of a client's own material that you read before the first meeting. To get one, drop up to 10 client files in the box above, such as reports, decks, spreadsheets and contracts, or paste your notes or a ChatGPT chat. River reads every page, slide and tab in full, notes tabs included, and logs each fact with its exact wording and location. Then it writes the brief into a doc in your workspace.
The brief opens with what River read, what the client does, and the three facts that matter most. Then come notes on each file, a key facts table with sources and dates, contradictions with both versions quoted, and 5 to 10 questions for the client. Figures are copied exactly, anything calculated is labeled, and a fact with no source becomes a question instead. A difference in period or method, such as FY24 against FY25, is explained rather than called a contradiction.
If you paste a ChatGPT chat, River treats it as notes and checks every claim in it against your files. ChatGPT, the broader tool, can build a brief too if you write the instructions yourself. River builds one from a single drop, and its privacy policy rules out training AI on your uploads. Next, ask for a SWOT analysis or a client email, plan interviews with the stakeholder interview guide template, then run interview synthesis on the transcripts.

What you'll get
Your client files turned into a sourced brief, compared with ChatGPT
- What each file says, with the file named beside it
- Key facts and figures, each traced to where it came from
- Contradictions between files, and open questions for the client
Before and after
Client files in. One brief you can check.
Kestrel Dairies' 2025 annual report (PDF), a board strategy deck (PowerPoint), a sales by region sheet (Excel), and your typed notes from the kickoff call with the CFO.
What each file says Annual report 2025: revenue $84m, up 6%, with growth credited to coffee-shop customers (p. 3). Board strategy deck: a plan to exit two supermarket contracts by 2027 (slide 9). Key facts and figures Foodservice share of sales: 41% (Sales by region, tab FY25). Contradictions Foodservice share: 41% in the sales sheet, "about a third" in the annual report (p. 5). To settle it, ask the CFO which figure the board uses. Open questions for the client 1. Are both supermarket exits approved, or still proposals? (Board deck, slide 9)
Every fact names its file and page, so a wrong number is easy to trace.

Questions consultants ask
Common questions
Is ChatGPT good for consultants?
Yes, for drafting, brainstorming and research, as long as you check its work. In a 2023 Harvard Business School study3, BCG consultants using GPT-4 did more and better work on tasks suited to AI. On a complex problem built from spreadsheets and interviews, they were 19 percentage points less likely to be right. The HBS write-up advises picking the tasks that benefit and staying within them.
Is it safe to put client documents in ChatGPT?
It depends on your client agreement and your ChatGPT plan. OpenAI says1 it may use content from individual plans such as Free, Plus and Pro to train its models unless you opt out in Data controls. Business, Enterprise and Edu data isn't used for training by default. River doesn't use your uploads to train AI. Check your engagement letter or NDA before you upload anything.
How many files can a ChatGPT project hold?
A ChatGPT project holds up to 5 files on Free, 25 on Go or Plus, and 40 on Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, according to OpenAI's Projects help page2. Only 10 can be uploaded at once. On this page, River takes up to 10 files per drop, as Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, CSV or text, and keeps them with your brief.
How do I write a client brief with River?
Drop up to 10 of the client's files into the box at the top of this page, or paste your notes or a ChatGPT chat. River reads every file in full and writes the brief into your free River workspace, with a source beside every fact. Edit it there, share it, or ask River for a SWOT or a client email next.
Can I bring my ChatGPT chats into River?
Yes. Copy a ChatGPT chat about the client and paste it into the box, ideally with the client's files. River treats the chat as notes, not evidence, and checks each claim against the files: confirmed, contradicted or not in the files. Pasted on its own, the chat still becomes a brief, which says at the top that no client files were checked.
When is ChatGPT the better choice?
When you want one assistant for nearly everything. ChatGPT handles voice conversations, image generation and web search, links to apps such as Google Drive, Slack and SharePoint, and builds decks and spreadsheets through ChatGPT Work4. Choose River when client files need to become a brief that names the source of every fact, from one drop. Also weighing Google's NotebookLM? See how it compares with River.
Is this ChatGPT alternative free?
Yes, it is free to start. Your client brief opens in a River workspace, where you can edit it, share it or ask River to change it. Paid plans add more AI use and access to the most advanced models. ChatGPT also has a free plan, and OpenAI's pricing page5 lists Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 and Pro from $100.
